YMCA Announces Outdoor Center Pool Closes
The West Shore YMCA will not be opening its Outdoor Center swimming pool this summer, due to issues related to complying with requirements set forth by the Virginia Graeme Baker Act.
After 55 years of serving the New Cumberland Community, the Board of Directors of the Harrisburg Area YMCA adopted the recommendation of the West Shore YMCA Board of Managers on February 17, 2009 to close the swimming pool at its New Cumberland location. The Outdoor Center Summer Camp will remain open and the children will be transported to other swimming pools for their lessons and recreational swims.
Since the new regulations were announced, the YMCA has worked diligently to comply with the new Virginia Graeme Baker Act. However, due to the age and design of the Outdoor Center pool drain, plumbing and filter systems, compliance with the new federal requirements could not be made without significant re-engineering and construction work.
The YMCA holds itself to the highest standards when it comes to pool safety and has completed the modifications required under the Virginia Graeme Baker Act, to its four indoor swimming pools at the West Shore YMCA.
YMCAs commend the Virginia Graeme Baker Act’s intent to increase safety in public pools. Water safety is integral to our history and mission. This past year, the West Shore YMCA provided swimming lessons for 2100 children and a comprehensive competitive swim team program for 400 kids.
